Central Universities are universities established under an Act of Parliament and are under the control and purview of Ministry of Education, Government of India. In 2009, Parliament passed Central Universities Act, which paved way for creation of 16 Central Universities in addition to the existing ones, to give representation to all states. Accordingly, all the Central Universities are now governed by the Central Universities Act, 2009.
As of June 2020, there are 54 Central Universities providing technical and non-technical programs to young minds.
List of Central Universities:
The 54 Central Universities together offer close to 1.68 Lac seats under various disciplines at undergraduate level. The admissions to most universities are done based on merit (class XII marks) except for a few of them which conduct separate entrance test for admissions to the programs offered, all or few of them. However, 14 of the Central Universities, the ones established after 2009, currently conduct a Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) for admissions to various disciplines at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) is currently conducted by 14 Central Universities and 4 State Universities. The exam is conducted in offline mode. CUCET involves two Parts in offline mode:
For every correct response, candidate is awarded 3 marks and there is a penalty of 1 mark for every incorrect response.
Participating Universities decide the cut offs based on the number of applications received for each program and University.
However, the proposed Common Entrance Test for the 54 Central Universities will be a computer-based test to be conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). The details about the exam is expected to be announced around February 2021. The exam will be conducted twice a year but for the academic session 2021-22, it will be conducted just once.
Candidate must have completed 10+2 or equivalent from a recognised board in India to appear for the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET). For some programs, there are additional subject based criteria to be fulfilled.
CUCET in the current format involves two parts:
For the aptitude segment (Part A), one needs to master the reasoning and comprehension skills.
For Part B, one needs to have conceptual clarity of the subjects taught in class XII.
Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) in the current avatar is an offline exam conducted in the month of May over a period of two days.
