IIFT 2013-2015 Exam Analysis

The pattern of the paper was very much on predictable lines. As usual, the paper was lengthy. It had 128 questions divided into four sections. Verbal Ability Section was divided into two parts- Reading Comprehension and English Usage. Similarly Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation were two different parts of the same section. Each question had four options and the extent of the negative marking was 1/3rd of the marks allotted to the question. IIFT has clearly stated that sectional cut-offs will be considered this year. So, it was important for a student to not only solve and maximize his score but also to manage time between various sections. The break-up of the sections is given below:

English Usage
Just like previous years, there were quite a few questions from Vocabulary. There were a lot of sitters in this section. Two of the grammar questions contained lengthy sentences and they required a careful reading to arrive at the correct options. One Grammar question was incorrect as all the four sentences had some or the other error. In the Para Jumble questions were easy and could have been attempted. A new-type of question (two questions) asked for identifying the appropriate figure of speech; however these questions too were easy. One should have attempted the ‘Identify the Correct Spelling’ questions by eliminating the options.

Reading Comprehension
This section had 16 questions, which were divided among four passages. Two of the passages were lengthy but the questions in them were direct and could have been attempted following the skimming and scanning approach. Other two passages were relatively short and they also had direct questions. A wise approach would have been to read the questions first. A test taker could have targeted attempting 7-8 questions with around 90 percent accuracy.

Logical Reasoning
The questions in this section were easy. The Logical Reasoning sets were shorter in length as compared to
previous years. There were two questions from Verbal Logic. There were more singlets in the paper as compared to last year. Two questions in this section were incorrect.

Data Interpretation
Though most of the data in the questions was straightforward and easy to understand but the questions were not easy to attempt. Two sets in this section were attemptable and the rest were tough and should have been left. Questions that ask the test taker to check the validity of the statements were missing.
These questions, until now, have been a steady part of the IIFT paper.

Quantitative Ability
A good chunk of the section was from the area of Modern Mathematics. The important thing in this section was the correct selection of questions. One could have attempted about 17 questions in 30 minutes.

IIFT reduced the number of calls last year by 10%. Since we don’t have information about the number of calls that would be made this year, it is very difficult to predict the cut-offs. However, an overall score of 44-45 should be good enough to fetch a call.

CL extends its best wishes to all IIFT aspirants
All the very best!!
